1209I did nothing during November 2009, so, on December 1, I decided that I would do one thing every day that month. These are the paper-based items that came out of that project.

1448 DecorationsIt had been a year since I bought my home, I was having a second dinner-party for my family and I had yet to even hang a picture on a wall. Originally, I'd planned not to use personal artwork, but relented when I only had a week to go before the party and was embarrassed that the house still looked like I'd just bought it. Rather than use old pieces, though, I decided to create some simple pieces that complicated the color scheme of my living room

Creative MatteMost of these pieces will appear to be unfinished, but this isn't the case. Ultimately, they were to be matted and framed in a way that would only reveal certain parts of the image through multiple "windows" in the matte. Some of the pieces were created with a semi-transparent matte in mind, which would then only partially obscure the "unfinished" parts of the work. In the gallery, I tried to reproduce these techniques using Photoshop.

Duality-DaysThe pieces in this collection have artwork on both sides of a piece of paper that independently stand-alone. However, the intention was to view the piece before a light source to allow the artwork on the opposite side to show through the artwork on the viewing side. This interaction creates an entirely new piece of art.

German Expressionist SeriesThese pieces use xerox copies of stills from German Expressionist films from the 1920s as their subjects. The first pieces used the sun behind a window as illumination for tracing the subject. The later and current pieces use a professional light box to make the tracings.

LatticeworkThis collection focuses on creating an intricate web of lines that fill entire sheets of paper. The selection study technique is used as the basis of the lines and, once the pieces are finished, the picture you see in the chaos is completely subjective.

Mangapad LinesThis collection was inspired by my desire to find the perfect, bleed- and wick-proof paper for working with lines. When I found a "manga pad" at the local art shop, I found what I'd been searching for. The goal is to fill the entire 11" x 8 1/2" space of each page with lines that are more-or-less random. However, once a piece begins to take shape, the lines become more-and-more guided towards a goal of some sort.

Orange SeriesThis collection is comprised of four pieces that were created for the dining room of a house I shared with a couple of people. The idea was warmer colors (yellow-red) with natural colors (brown-ochre) to go with the hardwood floors and trim present in the room. Unfortunately, the original pieces were ruined by water damage and the only electronic versions I have are pictures taken with a digital camera.

Rock GardenThe pieces in this collection use rocks from the shore of Middle Bass Island in Lake Erie as their canvas. Usually, Sharpie markers were used to fill-in patterns that wrapped around each stone. Sometimes, collections of stones created patterns that extended across multiple stones. Also, finished stones were used in conjunction with paper-based pieces to create interactive, 2D/3D combinational works of art.

Tiny AnimationThis series is essentially comprised of comics where each cell is only about 1 1/4" x 3/4" in size. The idea was to create a format that would lend itself to quick completion times, as well as a gimmick that would be interesting to look at when the cells were blown-up to a larger size. Most of these were originally created to make short videos for DaydreamTV.
